Our Exterior Painting Process

What happens from the moment you contact us to the final walk-through — no surprises, no shortcuts.

You Approve, We Schedule
We book a date that works for you. Weather is always a factor on exterior jobs in the Pacific Northwest — we monitor conditions and communicate if anything needs to shift. No surprises.

03
Surface Cleaning
Before any prep or paint goes on, the surface has to be clean. Depending on the job this means pressure washing, hand scrubbing mildew, or wiping down chalky surfaces. Paint doesn't stick to dirt — this step is not optional.

04
Scraping & Sanding
Any paint that's failing — peeling, bubbling, cracking — gets scraped off. Edges get sanded smooth so there's no visible ridge between old and new paint. This is the step most painters skip. We don't.
Critical prep
05
Caulking & Repairs
Every gap around windows, doors, trim, and where siding meets other materials gets caulked. This is how moisture gets into walls — sealing these gaps is as much about protecting your home's structure as it is about the paint job.

06
Priming Bare Surfaces
Any bare wood, repaired areas, or stain-prone surfaces get primed before the finish coat. Primer creates adhesion and prevents bleed-through. Skipping primer on bare wood is one of the most common shortcuts that causes early failure.
Before finish coat
07
Applying Finish Coats
We apply a minimum of two coats of finish paint. On exteriors, we use the right product for the surface — the Pacific Northwest climate means we choose paints rated for moisture resistance and temperature flexibility.

Final Walk-Through
We walk the property with you before we call it done. Every surface gets reviewed. We address anything on the spot. You also have a window after the job to flag anything we might have missed.

Why It Matters

Why We Do It This Way

Every step in our process exists for a reason. Here's why it matters for your home.

🌧️
Pacific Northwest Weather Is Hard on Paint
Pierce County gets real weather — moisture, temperature swings, UV exposure. Paint that isn't prepped and applied correctly fails fast here. Our process is built for this climate, not ideal conditions.
🔧
Caulking Protects Your Home
Most homeowners think of caulking as cosmetic. It isn't. Gaps around windows and trim are the primary entry points for moisture into your wall assembly. We seal them on every exterior job.
📋
Two Coats on Every Exterior
One coat on an exterior looks thin, fades faster, and provides less protection against moisture and UV. Two coats is our minimum — always. It's also what most paint manufacturers require to maintain their warranty coverage.

Your Exterior Is Your Home's First Line of Defense

Paint isn't just cosmetic on the exterior of your home. The Washington State Building Code requires exterior walls to provide a weather-resistant envelope — and paint is a core part of that system on most residential homes.

When you hire PSQP for an exterior job, you're getting a process that takes that seriously. Proper prep, the right products, and a finish that protects your investment for years — not just months.
